Connectome Harmonics
Presented by: Selen Atasoy
Harmonic patterns are ubiquitous in nature emerging in acoustics, optics, and electromagnetism as well as in biological processes such as morphogenesis. My research demonstrated that brain activity in awake, resting state is also follows stable harmonic wave patterns emerging on the anatomical connectivity of the human brain, i.e. “connectome harmonics” [1]. Crucially, these harmonic modes of brain’s structural connectivity provide a new frequency-specific language to describe any pattern of brain activity [2].
In this talk, I will demonstrate how various different states of consciousness including wakefulness [1,2], meditation, psychedelic state [3,4], anesthesia-induced loss of consciousness as well as vegetative and minimally conscious states can be uniquely characterized by their connectome-harmonic signatures. Furthermore, extending the fundamental principle of harmonic modes from the structural connectivity to functional connectivity of the human brain, I will illustrate how the harmonic modes of brain’s communication structure underlie the orchestration of brain’s functional organization [5].
Overall, the findings I will present in this talk suggest a new understanding of the fundamental principles underlying human brain function in terms the universal principal of harmonic waves.
In the final part of the talk I will illustrate how the new language of connectome harmonics can be utilized to represent and decode brain activity measured in EEG and discuss its potential applications to neurofeedback and neurotherapy.
Learning Objectives:
o Participants will be able to demonstrate what harmonic patterns are and how they are ubiquitous in nature.
o Participants will be able to demonstrate how the principle of harmonic waves provides the building blocks of brain activity.
o Participants will be able to demonstrate how this framework can be applied to EEG for neurofeedback and neurotherapy.
LEVEL: INTERMEDIATE
Content builds upon the learner's foundational knowledge, familiarity with the literature and/or experience in a content area. Programming at this level includes more depth than at a beginning level program. It could also serve as a refresher course for individuals who have a background in a content area and are interested in learning more contemporary applications. The primary goal of this particular program is to broaden the clinical, consultative, and research knowledge bases of attendees and was deemed intermediate, by the definition above. For those psychologists using the modality of biofeedback and interested in efficacy, science, and latest clinical applications. This conference presents research relevant to psychological practice, education, and science; (2) it is our intention to host an offering to help psychologists to keep up with the most current scientific evidence regarding assessment, intervention, and education; and (3) we believe that this program would allow psychologists to increase competencies to improve services to patients. This conference is IN NO WAY a substitute for the basic academic education and training needed for entry into the field of psychology.
